Do you have a box (or three) full of hand-written pages or notes that you want to start working with on a computer? Before dumping them into your scanner you’ll want to consider a few things.

  1. Do I understand the full process from opening the box of documents to editing them in Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
  2. Do I have the required hardware and software to complete the steps as I understand them?
  3. Is the expected return on the time invested positive or would it make sense to get assistance with the project?

It’s easy to rush into a project like this and find yourself hours later having made little progress toward your end goal. Depending on the documents you’re scanning, OCR, the technology that converts images into editable text, may be an insurmountable challenge with the wrong software. If you’re using a scanner that can’t advance through a stack of paper automatically, each page is going to be a chore.
